we're back at the DMACC transportation Institute over on 54th Street they have a big job fair and truck rodeo going on here today and then a little bit tomorrow as
well you can hear the trucks behind us right now Dave filter is joining us right now from theTransportation Institute and we have a little truck rodeo that's going to be going on to actually check in our time here coming up in just a couple of minutes as the students are gonna be running through their paces or the professionals in government through their paces – to
see how well they could do now what are they gonna do during the truck rodeo portion well we have of course set up a standard course everyone will drive the same equipment so we'll have past students graduates current students instructors all compete now what can we said you
said that is a standard course what is all involved in a standard course here to try to check their prowess behind the wheel oh there's all kinds of maneuvers out there there are serpentine backs I can explain that that's where your back between some barrels basically and zigzagging
in between barrels like like a snake backwards you bet you can do that they can do it yes what else is involved different backs forty five-degree we've got a if you look over there there's a alleyway that they'll go through that is a it starts out at one
hundred and twelve inches it ends up at a hundred six and you got to put the truck through it and how wide is a truck in general inch wise it's pretty close to 106 so there's not much much space left and they really have a lot of fun
out here too and there's a lot of pride involved in the truck in the truck rodeo isn't there absolutely you know coming out of the course they get a very good knowledge base a good skill level but after a few months and a lot of repetitions their skills
get a lot better so this gives them a chance to come back on an annual basis and compete and have a we have a barbecue going on 11:30 so okay and the barbecue is open for everybody to come over here and just check out the facility to tell
us a little bit of how long that's gonna go on you bet the barbecue will go from 11:30 to 1 and the rodeo will go the rest of the day and then tomorrow morning all right so the the rodeo will start here at about 9:30 and then take
a break as we are gonna be eating during the barbecue and then come back on and finish up this afternoon but you know some of the skills that are involved with some of the people that drive trucks like this I actually blow their own mind when they realize
what they can do with a big rig like this don't think you know you just got to take it slow get out and look and yeah I mean after a while they have to do a lot less of that we have some students that are behind you right
now let's find out some of these guys over here Tracy is over here let's say good morning treat hi do man okay so your student carry off okay how long have you been up trying to train here we are on week three and a half or week four
basically week four and when you came into this what have you driven before a big rig like this anything in particular just a straight truck and a normal van so it was time to step up and move up from my Class B to a class today I know
what's that going to give you the ability to do then to be able to drive a tractor trailer okay now a Class B explain for some people it might not know the difference because we mentioned Class A and Class B and things like that so what could you
do previously to going through this you drive a straight truck which is what a straight truck is what a big box truck you know it looks like a semi only it's a solid box it doesn't just pivot in the middle but some pivot correct a Class A allows
you to drive a full rig semi 80,000 pounds with that bends in the middle basically that's the difference and so how do you plan on going over the road you plan on staying in town I'd like to do a little bit of both to be honest with you
that's that's my goal as to uh is to to learn both sides of the industry right and what made you come to DMACC in order to get your training here at the Transportation Institute I've owned a delivery company for 20 years and I always had a Class B
and did not have a Class A and so it was a good opportunity to come here and I looked at different options and I thought d'emic was the best option a six-week program a lot more detail oriented on learning how to drive one of these trucks now the
delivery company is still going owned the delivery company gonna go on your own a combination of both to be honest with you yeah so this is really is the best of both worlds for you isn't absolutely absolutely I need I wanted to Class A there's a there's a
market out there for Class A CDL drivers so it this was just a great time to step up and and take my license into the next level you have anything in particular that you're hoping to after you get your class state license not in particular I'd like to
I'd like to to be honest with you try a little bit of everything between flatbed and tanker and drive and boxes and you're gonna be able to get that kind of experience to drive all those rigs here correct correct we we do do just the drive and trailers
however in the classroom they teach you the endorsements that you need to get to be able to pull each kind of trailer right and there's different levels again we we keep mentioning the different pay rate pay scales of things but truck driving can be very lucrative can absolutely
it can be it can be extremely lucrative right now there's such a shortage drivers can make a really large amount of money if they're willing to put it in the time and coming here to DMACC getting your six-week training and getting that certificate that says you took this
training here helps you get a better career you can there's other options out there but – coming to d-mac you can get a much better with that certificate more companies are apt to hire you and pay you more because you've spent the time to do the better training
and how convenient is it to have this right in your own backyard it's extremely convenient I live in Bondurant it's it's 10 minutes to come down here – to come to school every day so you get the best of everything here I mean lots of truck driving great
instructors you know we gonna launch a truck driving we're gonna I think we're gonna try this Chris you can see the the trucks maneuvering around here again they've got a couple of them in action right now going through the paces here and this is where the the rodeo
is going to take place here in a matter of moments and continue on a couple of sessions today up to about 11:30 before the BBQ start you hungry for barbecue absolutely so we're gonna be eatin barbecue at about 11:30 then come back here later on this afternoon till
about 4 o'clock and continue on with the rodeo and then back here again tomorrow we'll be here at 9:30 again tomorrow morning for another installment of the rodeo – so the competition will continue he getting involved in the competition – I'm going – okay I'm going – I
think it's gonna be a great opportunity to try some things that we as students haven't got to learn yet but why not give it a shot well you know I get better in a controlled environment in here and yeah we can only get better so why not challenge
your skills a little bit I put my money on Tracy right here I don't know why but I'm put my money on Tracy and then we're gonna test our skills coming up here in a little bit or lack they're of in just a while so don't go too
far we will be back in just a bit this is Iowa live live from d-mac the Transportation Institute at 2080 154 Street right here in Des Moines we'll be back in just a bit [Music]
